With four of the iFDA staff working for Wigan Athletic, we would like to congratulate the club on an incredible achievement by winning the most prestigious club competition in the world – The FA Cup. The manner in which Roberto Martinez‘s team defeated last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City FC, was a great showcase for the club’s philosophy in front of a worldwide audience of a billion people. Wigan’s 3-4-3 system overloaded City’s 4-4-2 all over the pitch with youth academy product Callum McManaman receiving the Man Of The Match award after dominating the 1v1 situation continually all game. McManaman showed not only outstanding technical and tactical qualities but also the psychological strengths which Roberto Martinez places a huge emphasis on when working with the younger players. This is a key focus of our residential football course.

The manner in which Wigan defeated Manchester City is even more commendable when stats reveal that the whole Wigan team cost just over £10m compared to the £241m which Mancini has spent since his arrival.

The club’s coaching staff and academy players took the ten hour journey to Wembley Stadium and back to witness one of the biggest upsets in the history of the FA Cup! Ironically, the last huge upset was in 1988 final when iFDA Coach Terry Phelan was part of the Wimbledon side which defeated Liverpool FC 1-0.

Congratulations to Wigan Athletic!
